Miniaturisation meeting report (2012) published on Kindle

    Off

Miniaturisation is the small-scale cultivation of biological cells. Miniature bioreactors are used for the purposes of screening for positive clones, optimisation of culture conditions, formulation and bioprocess development. Miniaturisation and automation enable high throughput parallel process optimisation and development at low costs and development time. The Annual Miniaturisation Event has seen many successes in the development of the technologies that have found their ways into various industrial applications. The two main bioreactor designs featured in the 2012 meeting were the microwell plates and the miniature stirred bioreactor. The bioreactors were presented with many advanced features and variations, and were showcased in the meeting for applications in microbial, mammalian and stem cell cultivations, and in tissue engineering.

Flow Cytometry meeting report (2012) published on Kindle

    Off

Cell suicide is a complex and multifaceted process, present in a wide variety of cell-types, whose function is critical to maintenance of human health. Flow cytometric tools for the understanding of the subcellular processes involved with cell suicide have mostly been focussed on apoptosis, however, this meeting introduces novel flow cytometric methods that can begin to characterise autophagy in a statistically robust way. Included within this, was an introduction to imaging flow cytometry, a method which allows visualisation of cells as in conventional microscopy, but with a far greater number of cells able to be measured. The final presentation of the day outlined the challenges with using flow cytometry within the highly regulated pharmaceutical sector for the analysis of cellular cytotoxicity, illustrating where changes must be made if flow cytometry is to become a truly universal tool.
